A classic baseball scoreboard and a 7-5 Twins win

Once again the gift that keeps on giving, otherwise known as the internet, delivered something of interest for this Twins-focused blog. Crosley Field, Cincinnati, July 30, 1967 – Pete Rose in LF under the shadow of one of the most majestic scoreboards ever with a 7-foot Longines clock perched on top. It was built in... Twins top Rays, look very, very good as new season approaches

Nick Gordon homered and tripled, lefty Devin Smeltzer pitched four scoreless innings to earn his second win of spring and the Twins rolled the Tampa Bay Rays 8-2 on Saturday to improve to 7-9 in Grapefruit League action. The Twins continue to hit and pitch well, and if that continues… well, that’s the name of... Continue Reading »

The year the Twins lost 2 games to start the season (yes, this is a thing)

The Minnesota Twins of the 1960s were a good team, some might even call them a great one. And this much was certain: they had left their sad-sack ways behind in Washington, D.C., and now won with regularity after their move to the upper Midwest. Although the team won only 70 games in its inaugural... Continue Reading »

The day the Twins’ Brant Alyea went 4-for-4 in 1970

I wasn’t sure I was going to come up with a Twins-related nugget to write about this week as baseball sits on the sidelines, waiting, like we all are, for the curve of the coronavirus to flatten. But then the Baseball-Reference.com newsletter landed in my inbox and there it was: a little item about top... Continue Reading »

Is there still room for Cesar Tovar in the Twins Hall of Fame?

Former reliever Joe Nathan and team president Jerry Bell are the newest inductees into the Twins Hall of Fame. I have no opinion on whether Bell deserves to be included, but Nathan certainly does. Nathan was one of three players the Twins were able to get from the San Francisco Giants for catcher A.J. Pierzynski... Continue Reading »

Hi, I’m Rolf Boone, Twins fan.

I became a fan of the Minnesota Twins after a friendly wager in the early 1980s. I survived Ron Davis, the meltdown in Cleveland, Phil Bradley at the Kingdome and then marveled at a rising generation of stars and two World Series wins in 1987 and 1991. Brad Radke made the 1990s bearable, while Kirby Puckett’s eye injury, exit from the game and eventual death made it almost too much to bear. The new century ushered in more talent — Joe Mauer, Johan Santana, Joe Nathan, Torii Hunter, Justin Morneau — and consecutive seasons of playoff baseball, followed by consecutive seasons of losing baseball. A winning season returned in 2015. So here we are. Go Twins.
