‘You’re playing like the Chicago White Sox,’ said relative to Dan Gladden

Before the Twins’ Game 4 loss to the Houston Astros, there was a moment of fun between two ex-Twins and some good humor in the radio booth. Former Twins third baseman Gary Gaetti threw out the first pitch to former left fielder and recent Twins Hall of Fame inductee Dan Gladden, who also does Twins... Continue Reading »

Twins predictably flat after clinching AL Central crown

The Twins won the division Friday night after an 8-6 win over the Los Angeles Angels. And then they partied on the field, in the clubhouse and who knows where the party took them after that, but they probably weren’t in the best of shape to take the field on Saturday. It certainly showed because... Continue Reading »

81-75 with 6 games to go and it all fell apart for the Twins in ’84

After I became a Twins fan (yes, there was a beginning), I suffered through a 102-loss season in 1982, another down year in ’83 and then, incredibly it seemed, the Twins began to show signs of life in 1984. They were helped by a young nucleus of rising stars, including Kirby Puckett, Kent Hrbek, Frank... Continue Reading »

The day the Twins’ Brant Alyea went 4-for-4 in 1970

I wasn’t sure I was going to come up with a Twins-related nugget to write about this week as baseball sits on the sidelines, waiting, like we all are, for the curve of the coronavirus to flatten. But then the Baseball-Reference.com newsletter landed in my inbox and there it was: a little item about top... Continue Reading »

The day the Twins and Red Sox turned 10 double plays

The Twins Almanac is a website and active twitter feed that reports on the history of the team, its players and those athletes with a connection to Minnesota. An old Twins Almanac tweet showed up in my own twitter feed last week, reminding me of a time when the Twins turned two triple plays against... Continue Reading »

When religion divided the Minnesota Twins

What do you do when the Twins fall to 16-40 by early June? You find a reason to avoid reading depressing box scores. For me that meant buying “Down To The Last Pitch,” sportswriter Tim Wendel’s book on the 1991 World Series between the Twins and Atlanta Braves. Many have called it the greatest World... Hi, I’m Rolf Boone, Twins fan.

I became a fan of the Minnesota Twins after a friendly wager in the early 1980s. I survived Ron Davis, the meltdown in Cleveland, Phil Bradley at the Kingdome and then marveled at a rising generation of stars and two World Series wins in 1987 and 1991. Brad Radke made the 1990s bearable, while Kirby Puckett’s eye injury, exit from the game and eventual death made it almost too much to bear. The new century ushered in more talent — Joe Mauer, Johan Santana, Joe Nathan, Torii Hunter, Justin Morneau — and consecutive seasons of playoff baseball, followed by consecutive seasons of losing baseball. A winning season returned in 2015. So here we are. Go Twins.
