How many designated hitters do the Twins really need?

The Twins probably have generated more speculation than actual news this off-season, and that continued with two recent stories. One, by Jon Heyman, makes the convincing argument that former Cleveland Indian Mike Napoli would be a good fit for the Twins, while the other by Mike Berardino, citing an unnamed source, says the Twins are... Twins’ spoiler tour bombs in New York

The Twins, who made life interesting for the playoff-contending Detroit Tigers after a four-game split last week, brought the spoiler tour to New York and bombed, getting swept in three games by the Mets. The Twins scored four runs in three games, including back-to-back 3-2 losses on Saturday and Sunday. Despite eight hits, a 4-for-4... Continue Reading »

Twins top Rangers as tragedy unfolds in Dallas

Update: Outfielder Eddie Rosario, who struggled at the plate earlier in the year and then compounded things with some crummy base running, “redemptified” — to quote Max Kepler — himself Saturday night, going four-for-five at the plate, including two doubles and a home run to beat the Rangers 8-6. Ricky Nolasco finally picked up his... Continue Reading »

Twins’ Milone finally wins a game

Update: Ervin Santana not only pitched his best game of the season on Wednesday, but he pitched one of his best games in years, throwing a two-hit, complete game with eight strikeouts and no walks to shutout the A’s 4-0 — and he did it in exactly 100 pitches. Don’t look now, but the Twins... Continue Reading »

Welcome back, Miguel Sano! (to 3B or DH, that is)

Twins slugger Miguel Sano is back with the team after completing a rehab assignment at Triple-A Rochester, and he appears to have picked up where he left off in both good and bad ways. The good side of the ledger is that Sano, despite some uninspiring numbers during his rehab stint, can hit major league... Continue Reading »

Is a once-heralded Twins prospect on his way to Asia?

Kennys Vargas, who stands six-foot-five and weighs around 280 pounds, has attracted interest from a ball club in Asia, the Pioneer Press reported earlier this week. Vargas made a splash with the Twins in 2014, showing he could hit with power during the second half of the season. But he struggled at the plate the following season... Continue Reading »

Twinning: Twins show winning form early

Hope does spring eternal, especially if you’re a baseball fan. And even more so if you’re a fan of the Minnesota Twins because after a disastrous start to the season, Twins nation — if such a fan following exists — have plenty to get excited about. Twins held scoreless for 20 innings to start the... Continue Reading »

Twins recap: Pitcher Phil Hughes shines in another losing campaign

Update: So that’s a wrap on the 2014 season for the Twins, the team finishing 70-92 after splitting a final four-game series with the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers, meanwhile, won the division and will advance to the playoffs for the fourth straight year, while the Twins have lost 90 or more games over the same... Continue Reading »

Hi, I’m Rolf Boone, Twins fan.

I became a fan of the Minnesota Twins after a friendly wager in the early 1980s. I survived Ron Davis, the meltdown in Cleveland, Phil Bradley at the Kingdome and then marveled at a rising generation of stars and two World Series wins in 1987 and 1991. Brad Radke made the 1990s bearable, while Kirby Puckett’s eye injury, exit from the game and eventual death made it almost too much to bear. The new century ushered in more talent — Joe Mauer, Johan Santana, Joe Nathan, Torii Hunter, Justin Morneau — and consecutive seasons of playoff baseball, followed by consecutive seasons of losing baseball. A winning season returned in 2015. So here we are. Go Twins.
