Remembering Hosken Powell, Twins outfielder

Outfielder Hosken Powell, who played four seasons with the Twins in the late 1970s and as a rookie cracked home runs against two future Hall of Fame pitchers, died this past June in Pensacola, Florida. He was 70. Powell was drafted out of Chipola College by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first round of the... Continue Reading »

Twins announce TV team. There’s just 1 person missing

The Twins have announced the TV team for the new MLB-produced broadcasts, and all the familiar names are there, including lead voice Cory Provus and ex-Twins and booth mates Justin Morneau, LaTroy Hawkins and Glen Perkins, to name just a few. Just one person was missing: Roy Smalley, who also announced last week that he... Continue Reading »

Lopez loses again as Twins drop finale to Texas

The Twins’ Pablo Lopez, who was pegged as a possible AL Cy Young candidate this season, has been anything but that after he lost again on Sunday to the Texas Rangers, 6-2. Lopez has allowed 13 runs over his two previous starts. He’s now 4-5 with an ERA of 5.25. “It makes me mad more... Continue Reading »

Will the Twins win the division? The answer is just around the corner

The make or break moment of the Twins’ 2023 season is here because the series of games they play over the next two weeks should determine their fate. They play competitive teams and weaker clubs, although that weaker club is the Cleveland Guardians, and when the Twins and Guards get together, history has shown they... Continue Reading »

Twins edge Rangers to keep pace with Guardians

The Twins smacked back-to-back home runs in the first inning and that was all the runs they needed Friday after starter Dylan Bundy and four relievers made it stand for a 2-1 win over the Texas Rangers. It was the Twins’ fourth straight win, which is good because the Cleveland Guardians keep winning, too. The... Continue Reading »

How do you like the Twins now?

A recent check of social media showed that all was not well in Twins Territory. Twins fans, at least on Twitter, appeared to be coming unglued due to the lack of deal-making so far this offseason. As top free agents continued to come off the board and go elsewhere, such as reliever Kirby Yates and... Continue Reading »

Twins end June with 15-12 record

Any number of teams in major league baseball would welcome a one-month record of 15-12. But for the Twins, who went 38-18 from the end of March through May, finishing three games over .500 amounts to a June swoon for this club. You could hardly call their play of late bad baseball, but let’s hope... Continue Reading »

Twins’ experiment with ‘opener’ strategy goes horribly wrong in Texas

Taking a page from the Tampa Bay Rays, the Twins employed an “opener” strategy on Sunday, in which a series of relievers pitches the game instead of a traditional starting pitcher. The theory behind it is that once the starting reliever or closer has faced the toughest part of the batting order, the “primary pitcher”... Continue Reading »

In the mix, a poem

Hi, I’m Rolf Boone, Twins fan.

I became a fan of the Minnesota Twins after a friendly wager in the early 1980s. I survived Ron Davis, the meltdown in Cleveland, Phil Bradley at the Kingdome and then marveled at a rising generation of stars and two World Series wins in 1987 and 1991. Brad Radke made the 1990s bearable, while Kirby Puckett’s eye injury, exit from the game and eventual death made it almost too much to bear. The new century ushered in more talent — Joe Mauer, Johan Santana, Joe Nathan, Torii Hunter, Justin Morneau — and consecutive seasons of playoff baseball, followed by consecutive seasons of losing baseball. A winning season returned in 2015. So here we are. Go Twins.
