Meet the new boss, not the same as the old boss

Falvey & Co. made a small but significant move this week when they signed pitcher, Ryan Vogelsong, best known for his years with the San Francisco Giants, to a new contract with the Twins. Here’s what stood out to me: Vogelsong was signed to a minor league contract, not a multiyear, major league deal. And... Continue Reading »

Twins fall to Mets and the ageless wonder Bartolo Colon

The Twins were shutout by none other than Bartolo Colon on Friday, the 43-year-old starting pitcher for the New York Mets who won his 14th game of the season and No. 232 of his amazing, age-defying career. Colon scattered three hits over seven innings and then stepped aside for two relievers who blanked the Twins... Continue Reading »

Pitcher Mike Pelfrey, formerly with the Twins, signs $16M deal with Detroit Tigers

No tears were shed Sunday after pitcher Mike Pelfrey, formerly with the Twins, signed as a free agent with the Detroit Tigers, agreeing to $16 million over two seasons. And even more so if you’re a fan of the Minnesota Twins because after a disastrous start to the season, Twins nation — if such a fan following exists — have plenty to get excited about. Twins held scoreless for 20 innings to start the... Continue Reading »

Twins recap: Pitcher Phil Hughes shines in another losing campaign

Update: So that’s a wrap on the 2014 season for the Twins, the team finishing 70-92 after splitting a final four-game series with the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers, meanwhile, won the division and will advance to the playoffs for the fourth straight year, while the Twins have lost 90 or more games over the same... Continue Reading »

Hi, I’m Rolf Boone, Twins fan.

I became a fan of the Minnesota Twins after a friendly wager in the early 1980s. I survived Ron Davis, the meltdown in Cleveland, Phil Bradley at the Kingdome and then marveled at a rising generation of stars and two World Series wins in 1987 and 1991. Brad Radke made the 1990s bearable, while Kirby Puckett’s eye injury, exit from the game and eventual death made it almost too much to bear. The new century ushered in more talent — Joe Mauer, Johan Santana, Joe Nathan, Torii Hunter, Justin Morneau — and consecutive seasons of playoff baseball, followed by consecutive seasons of losing baseball. A winning season returned in 2015. So here we are. Go Twins.
